Carpools are simple -- just share a ride with one or more other
people. People who carpool usually live near each other or along
the same route. Some carpools rotate drivers, while others have
a designated driver whose road expenses are largely covered by the
passengers.
Joining a carpool saves money and time. Passengers get time to
eat, read, doze or just chat and avoid the stress of driving in
rush-hour traffic.
You can even carpool for errands and longer road trips. Not only
will you reduce your expenses, but you're likely have more fun,
too.
After you've had a chance to get together with a few people who
live or work near you, you can form your carpool. Start by setting
up a meeting, conference call or group e-mail to discuss arrangements
including:
- who will drive
- how to share costs
- pick-up and drop-off times and locations
- waiting times if someone is late
- what to do if someone is sick
It's also a good idea to set some basic ground rules for:
- eating, drinking or smoking in the car
- music or radio stations
- side trips and stops
- seating arrangements
- car maintenance and cleanliness
